ANI – Animal Therapy – the Key to Recovery and Support
Animal assisted therapy is a therapeutic intervention that incorporates animals such as dogs, cats, rabbits and horses.
Animals can provide a sense of calm and comfort, diverting attention from a potentially stressful situation or treatment.
Animal therapy is very relevant in the management of depression, traumatic brain injury oncology and rehabilitation.
Animal Therapy is split into 3 categories: Therapy, Support and educational.
- Delegates will learn the difference between pets, service and therapy animals and how the animals are used in each scenario.
- Delegates will be able to apply the SOP by identifying an appropriate patient that will benefit from Animal therapy and including this as a management tool in the discharge plans and home-based care programs.
- South Africa has embraced Animal therapy and video footage with photographs will be used to demonstrate the power of these interventions.
