Merline Dessalines, RN, BSN, MSN/MHA
Merline Dessalines has worked at the VA Hospital in Columbia, SC for seven years. First, she has worked as a GI nurse and permanent circulator. Currently, she is a GI Case Manager and Liver Transplant Coordinator, a position that was previously held by a nurse practitioner. Customer satisfaction is her passion. She has devoted her time and skills to ensure that the veterans receive the best possible care and services.
Her prior nursing experiences include ten years at the Palmetto Health Organization as a Cardiac nurse where she was also a charge nurse, a mentor and the chairperson of the leadership program. She has started working on the cardiac unit in 2001 at providence hospital a couple years after completing the LPN program and was trying to find her seat in the nursing world.
She went back to school in 2003 for her Associate degree. She has worked med-surg., post-partum care, neuro, ortho, ED, and hospice. In 2011 she went back to school and received her Bachelor degree in Nursing from the University of South Carolina-Upstate. Three years later, 2014, she went to Phoenix University and received her Masters’ in Nursing and Healthcare Administration.
Awards/Activity: she was a president list nominee; Phi Theta Kappa; the employee of the quarter; Daisy reward and Sigma Theta Tau International.
Certifications: PCCN, ACLS, BLS and BLS Instructor
Current activity: She is part of the Telehealth and Ethics committees at Dorn VA in Columbia South Carolina. Her current yellow belt project is the liver transplant team to embrace the integrated case management services in the organization. She has not yet held a case manager certification, but she has planned to take the review course and hoped to become a CCM very soon.
