Allen Burton, MD
Allen Burton is Divisional Vice President and Medical Director for Neuromodulation at Abbott. In this capacity, he provides input on research and development, clinical study strategy, design, and execution, regulatory and health policy matters, and he acts as a liaison with physicians and payers. Dr. Burton joined Abbott in January, 2017 when the company acquired St. Jude Medical. He joined St. Jude Medical in September of 2015. Dr. Burton received his M.D. from the Baylor College of Medicine and a B.S from The University of Notre Dame. He trained in anesthesiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, serving as chief resident. He completed fellowship training at The University of Texas Medical Branch as a Carl Koller Scholar. While a clinical pain fellow, he did research in the Marine Biomedical Institute in the lab of Dr Jin Mo Chung on neuropathic pain. Dr. Burton was on the faculty of the University of Texas Medical Branch and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center where he served as Professor and Chairman of the Pain Medicine Department at MD Anderson and the Director of the Ahuja Center for Pain Research until 2011. Dr Burton has trained more than 25 pain fellows, and authored more than 75 manuscripts, in addition to coauthoring two textbooks. He holds 9 patents and co-founded Vapogenix, Inc. a pharmaceutical company focused on wound pain and inflammation. Dr. Burton lives in Texas with his wife and three sons. He enjoys running and cycling with his family.
