1002 – Mega Trends in the Workforce

The aging U.S. workforce and employees with comorbidities, such as excessive weight and chronic conditions like diabetes, pose significant challenges to employers in terms of managing workers’ compensation benefits and claims. Employees over the age of 55 are projected to comprise a quarter of the U.S. workforce by 2020, up from 19 percent in 2010, and double the percentage from 2000. Nearly one-third of the population is obese, and that percentage is projected to rise dramatically in the coming years. Older and obese workers are not only more susceptible to injury (specifically through falls) but are generally slower to recover and return to work than younger and more physically fit employees. However, these issues can be addressed with a carefully calibrated workforce management program that focuses on matching older workers more closely to the tasks they are capable of performing while incorporating ergonomics improvements, wellness programs and health coaching. Participants will identify on-going cases where these types of programs can be implemented to avoid and alleviate potential workforce injuries.
