Affixed by stunning Lake Michigan and decorated with inspiring architecture, Chicago is more than just a big city. Besides its striking downtown area, which includes some of the tallest buildings in the world, Chicago has a distinctive shoreline, hundreds of vibrant parks and 77 unique neighborhoods. It’s this truly distinctive mix of incredible attractions and cultural allure that make Chicago one of the friendliest, most livable cities in America.

Chicago’s developed a reputation as a must-visit destination for diners. In fact, Chicago is one of only three cities in the country to have its culinary chops rated by the prestigious Michelin Guide. With incredible shopping on The Magnificent Mile, world premiere performances in its famed Theater District and one of the country’s most active nightlife scenes, this city is always buzzing. Chicago also flaunts more than 60 museums, five regional Tony Award-winning theaters and, no matter the season, there’s always a professional sports team to cheer to victory.

Situated squarely in the center of the country and equipped with two major, international airports, getting to Chicago is easy. Once you arrive, you’ll be able to choose from more than 38,000 hotel rooms in the downtown area alone. From sleek downtown properties to luxury boutiques, you will discover outstanding accommodations for every style and budget.

Millennium Park, deep dish pizza and Wrigley Field are all compelling enough reasons to visit Chicago, but the city’s most endearing quality is its people. Chicago’s neighborhoods represent more than 100 countries and it’s through this diversity and profound city culture that we are able to develop some of the country’s best restaurants, theaters and museums. Enjoy your visit to Chicago!

Safety in Chicago for 2018 CMSA Conference Attendees

The picture of Chicago as a city plagued with crime and violence has been in US news this year. However, the crimes that make headlines occur in neighborhoods that do not have tourist attractions and the crime is largely centered around gang rivalries. Chicago hosts millions of tourists each year and the streets in the parts of town that any conference attendees are likely to frequent are safe.

General precautions should be taken, just as in any major metropolitan area, including:

  • Do not wear your conference name badge on the street
  • Do not flash cash or expensive jewelry around on the street or public transportation
  • Do not enter dark alleys or deserted streets
  • Protect yourself against pick pockets, especially on public transportation
  • Use caution when approached by a stranger offering unsolicited services
  • Travel in a group of at least 2 or 3
  • Know where you are going before you set out, and have a good map to help direct you
  • If you feel uncomfortable about your soundings, step into a shop to assess the situation and ask for help if necessary

One of the best aspects of Chicago is the Midwestern custom of open friendliness. People on the street, bus drivers, cabbies, and police are approachable, friendly and helpful. The areas of town where you will go to enjoy the world renowned restaurants, shopping, museums, and beaches are all safe and filled with people who will offer advice and directions.

You will find plenty of taxis, as well as drivers for Uber and Lyft quickly and easily accessible. The trains and buses are safe, efficient and easy to use. Chicago’s streets and sidewalks are easy to navigate, and provide plenty of open area to see around your, and are easy to navigate, because they are laid out on regular, and straight grid.

In short, Chicago is a welcoming city that is easy to navigate. It is filled with people of strong, friendly midwestern values. It is a great city for tourists to come to and enjoy.
